Perkins signs diesel venture in China
Britain's VarityPerkins has finalized a joint venture company, Perkins Engines (Tianjin) Co. Ltd., with Tianjin Power Equipment Plant in China. The new venture, of which Perkins owns 60%, is expected to initially build 50,000 diesel engines a year in China. The new company will manufacture Perkins Phaser and 1000 series four- and six-liter diesels covering an output of 80 to 210 hp. The new company expects to build the 50,000 engines annually before 2001 and has set a target of 120,000 diesels annually as a long term goal.
Perkins said the engines will initially be shipped in kit form from its Peterborough facility in the U.K. and assembled in China, with component production to begin in 1998.
