India will lower sulfur content in diesel fuels

18 January 1999

Effective 1 October 1999, diesel fuels of lower sulfur content will be available at retail outlets in India. The sulfur level will be lowered from the current 1% to 0.25%.

According to the Indian Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, 57 billion rupees ($1.34 billion) had been spent to implement a hydro-desulfurisation project at nine refineries to reduce the sulfur content in diesel.

A next step reduction is also planned to bring the sulfur level down from 0.25% to 0.05% - the current level in the USA, EU, and Japan.
