Engelhard to expand emission catalysts capacity in China
11 November 2003
Engelhard Corporation announced that it has broken ground for a new plant in China that will triple the company’s capacity to produce emission catalysts for Chinese automotive industry.
The new plant will replace an existing Engelhard facility that opened in Shanghai in 2000. The new facility is scheduled to come on stream by mid-2004 and will triple Engelhard’s current production capacity in China. The new plant is also designed for additional expansion in coming years.
Production of light-duty vehicles in China is growing in excess of 15% per year and is expected to surpass 2.5 million units this year, according to Engelhard. Analysts predict, China will be the world’s third largest automotive market by 2010. While domestic demand continues to fuel the boom in Chinese car manufacturing, the industry may be further stimulated by exports. Several manufacturers have announced plans to begin exporting cars from China by 2005.
