California ARB verifies retrofit SCR system

24 January 2005

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) has verified the Advanced Diesel Emission Control (ADEC) system by the Extengine Transport Systems. The system—which employs a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst to reduce nitrogen oxides emissions—has been verified to provide 80% NOx reduction and 25% (Level 1 device) PM emission reduction. It is the first ARB verification for a retrofit SCR system.

The system has been verified for 1991 to 1995 model year off-road Cummins 5.9-liter diesel engines from 150 to 200 hp, which are used in excavators, dozers, loaders, and utility tractor rigs. The system can be used with standard CARB or ultra low sulfur diesel fuel.

The ADEC system includes a diesel oxidation catalyst, selective catalytic reduction catalyst, and ammonia slip catalyst. Ammonia is injected upstream of the catalyst as the NOx reductant.
