DaimlerChrysler delivers first Euro V buses

DaimlerChrysler’s Mercedes-Benz Bus and Coach Unit has delivered the first seven Mercedes-Benz Citaro urban buses equipped with Euro V compliant engines. Seven coaches were delivered to transport operator Verkehrsgesellschaft Breitenbach GmbH based in Hamm, Germany. One bus went to Dutch transport operator Rotterdamse Elektrische Tram as the first part of a consignment totalling 90 Citaro urban buses which will be going into service from August 2006.

The buses are powered by the OM 906 hLA turbodiesel engines developing 205 kW (279 hp). The engines utilize the BlueTec selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system using urea solution (AdBlue) for NOx control. To make the system Euro V compliant, the developers increased the size the SCR catalyst.

From October 2006, all newly registered vehicles must meet the Euro IV standards (NOx = 3.5 g/kWh). The Citaro buses meet the Euro V standards (NOx = 2 g/kWh) ahead of the regulatory deadline, which is October 2008 for new type approvals and October 2009 for all new registrations.

Mercedes-Benz launched highway trucks equipped with the BlueTec urea-SCR technology in the early 2005. Over ten thousand of BlueTec trucks, many of them Euro V compliant, are currently on the roads.
