Carbon Motors to use BMW diesel engines for US police cars
23 March 2010
The BMW Group has received an order from the US’ Carbon Motors Corporation to supply diesel engines to be used in the Carbon E7 law enforcement vehicle. The agreement calls for delivery of more than 240,000 inline six-cylinder diesel engines complete with cooling and exhaust gas system and automatic transmission.
The BMW six-cylinder, 3 liter diesel engine—as currently available in the X5 and the 335d models in the North American market—is rated at 265 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque. In both models the engine uses urea-SCR technology for NOx control. In the Carbon E7, the diesel engine will reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 40%, said BMW.
Carbon Motors of Connesville, Indiana, was founded in 2003 as the world’s first manufacturer of purpose-built law enforcement vehicles. Carbon Motors reportedly received over 12,000 orders for the E7 police cruiser. The vehicle is to be sold only to law-enforcement agencies and taken back for destruction at the end of its 250,000 mile service life.
The US police vehicle market is estimated at about 65,000 vehicles a year, with Ford Crown Victoria and Dodge Charger currently being the major models.
