Mazda to introduce an HCCI engine
17 January 2017
Japan’s Mazda Motor will introduce an HCCI gasoline engine at the end of 2018 that would offer 30% better fuel efficiency, according to a Nikkei report. The engine is to be launched as the second generation of Mazda Skyactiv engine technology.
This would be the first practical application of the HCCI (homogeneous charge compression ignition) technology, a low temperature combustion (LTC) concept that can also reduce NOx and/or PM emissions by lowering the combustion temperature.
Mazda reportedly plans to incorporate the new engine in 2018 in the new Mazda3, dubbed Axela in Japan, which will undergo its first overhaul in five years. Following the Mazda3, the engine would be adopted gradually by other models.
The new engine would give the current Mazda3 an estimated mileage approaching 30 km/L (3.33 L/100 km = 70.6 mpg US). The company plans to incorporate the engine in vehicles built for the global market.
