Cummins to offer 15 L natural gas engine
14 October 2021
Cummins announced that it will bring to market a 15 liter natural gas engine for heavy-duty trucks.
The 15 liter engine will offer ratings up to 500 hp and 1,850 ft-lb of torque, and is expected to weigh 500 lbs less than comparable 15 liter diesel engines currently available on the market while not requiring selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment to meet 2024 California or US Environmental Protection Agency emission standards, according to Cummins.
Cummins said the new engine is an important part of its strategy toward zero-emissions. The engine is also the basis for the hydrogen internal combustion engine recently announced by the company. The new NG engine would debut in early 2024, according to media reports.
The 15 liter natural gas engine can be paired with a Cummins Eaton Automated Transmission Technologies Endurant HD Transmission and Cummins Fuel Delivery System, ensuring a fully integrated natural gas powertrain, Cummins said.
Cummins Westport currently offers the B6.7N, L9N, ISX12 G, and ISX12 N natural gas engines, all of which are spark-ignited, stoichiometric units with a three-way catalyst (TWC) aftertreatment. Westport discontinued its 15 liter high-pressure direct injection (HPDI 1.0) natural gas engine in 2013, and Cummins halted development of a 15 liter NG engine the following year.
