Cummins to launch next generation X15 diesel engine
2 March 2024
Cummins announced it will launch the next generation X15 diesel engine—a new product in the Cummins HELM™ 15-liter “fuel agnostic” platform. The new X15 engine will be compliant with the US EPA and CARB 2027 aligned emission regulations at launch, the company said. The next generation X15 diesel engine will serve the heavy-duty on-highway market in North America.
The new X15 diesel engine will retain the same ratings of the current X15—up to 605 hp and 2,050 ft-lb of torque. The engine will be optimized for powertrain integration with Eaton Cummins transmissions and Cummins-Meritor drivetrains.
The engine will feature improved greenhouse gas and fuel efficiency benefits. While these benefits were not quantified, Cummins referred to the new X15 as their “most efficient heavy-duty diesel engine ever”.
The X15 architecture utilizes a belt-driven, high output 48-volt alternator. The engine will meet the EPA 2027 emission standards utilizing an aftertreatment heater, Cummins said. No further details were released on the aftertreatment architecture.
The new X15 is capable of using biodiesel blends up to 20% and renewable diesel blends up to 100%.
The engine is built on the Cummins’ HELM™ “fuel agnostic” 15-liter engine platform, which includes different fueled engines with some parts commonality. Each engine version will operate using a different, single fuel. The X15N, the natural gas variant, is the first engine on the Cummins HELM™ platforms available to customers. The Cummins HELM™ platforms include the B, X10, and X15 engine platforms.
The new X15 will be produced in Jamestown, New York.
