Volvo Trucks North America announces availability of CARB 2024 Omnibus compliant heavy-duty engine

22 July 2024

Volvo Trucks North America announced the availability of an engine that meets the emission requirements of California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2024 Omnibus regulation.

The CARB 24-compliant engine is available for order in the VNR and VNL truck models with a power rating of 455 hp and 1650 lb-ft of torque.

The CARB Omnibus regulation includes a 2024 NOx emission standard of 0.05 g/bhp-hr (FTP)—a 75% reduction in NOx emissions compared to the existing US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standard of 0.20 g/bhp-hr.

Volvo Trucks has not revealed the emission certification values for the CARB 2024 engine. The CARB engine certification database currently lists one MY 2024 Volvo engine family that matches the above power and torque ratings. The engine (engine family RVPTH12.8CA1, L6, 12.8 L) has a NOx certification value of 0.07 g/bhp-hr (FTP) and a family emission limit (FEL) for NOx of 0.20 g/bhp-hr. This suggests that Volvo may intend to use emission credits to comply with the CARB 2024 Omnibus requirements.

The Volvo Trucks’ CARB 24-compliant engine features a linear exhaust aftertreatment system (EATS) that includes a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), diesel particulate filter (DPF), an aftertreatment heater, and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst. A 48-volt alternator has been incorporated onto the engine to supply power to a 48-volt battery that powers the heater during startup and low-load operation.

Each EATS component is designed for individual servicing or replacement.

Last month, the availability of a CARB 2024 heavy-duty engine was also announced by Peterbilt.

As a result of the Clean Truck Partnership—an agreement completed last year between CARB and truck manufacturers—CARB will align their emission requirements for heavy-duty engines with federal emission standards beginning in 2027.
