Mazda to develop new Skyactiv-Z engine

11 November 2024

Earlier this month, Mazda quietly announced that it would be developing a new engine. While details were limited, the SKYACTIV-Z will replace the SKYACTIV-G and SKYACTIV-X platforms. It will meet Euro 7/LEV IV/Tier 4 standards and debut in the market in 2027 as a 4-cylinder engine. The technology will also be applied to 6-cylinder engines in the future.

Mazda states that the SKYACTIV-Z engine achieves high thermal efficiency by realizing super lean burn combustion over a wide range from low to high rpm. Confusingly, they refer to the combustion as the lambda one combustion method.

Mazda also continues to develop the rotary engine stating that achieving emission compliance is very challenging, but that good progress is being made.

Mazda plans to make significant efficiency improvements by selection and concentration on engines, and gradually consolidating the overall number of engine types.

The announcement was buried in its second quarter financial results presentation of November 7.
