US DOE announces major deregulatory action plan

13 May 2025

The US Department of Energy (DOE) announced its “largest deregulatory effort in history,” proposing the elimination or reduction of 47 regulations that it says are driving up costs and lowering quality of life for the American people.

The DOE estimates that once finalized, the proposed actions would save an estimated $11 billion. These actions follow President Trump’s executive order Zero-Based Regulation to Unleash American Energy, intended to “restore consumer freedom, lower costs, and unleash American energy dominance.”

“Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, we are bringing back common sense—slashing regulations meant to appease Green New Deal fantasies, restrict consumer choice and increase costs for the American people,” said US Energy Secretary Chris Wright.

Among the proposed changes is the streamlining the administrative procedures related to natural gas imports and exports, removal of reporting requirements for voluntary GHG reporting, removal of production incentives for cellulosic biofuels, and removing the Renewable Energy Production Incentive (REPI).

Other proposed changes include the elimination or modification to dozens of consumer appliance standards, removal of various water and energy efficiency standards introduced by the previous administration, rescinding grant programs for buildings owned by local government and public care institutions, and elimination of DEI requirements for grant recipients.
