Fuel Regulations

ISO Marine Methanol Fuel

ISO 6583 specifies three categories of marine methanol: grade A (MMA), grade B (MMB) and grade C (MMC) [6314]. The standard applies to methanol from all forms of production. It applies at the point of custody transfer, prior to any required onboard treatment and for use as fuel in marine diesel engines, fuel cells and other marine applications. It can also be applied to methanol used as fuel in land-based applications similar to those used for marine purposes.

  • MMB is similar to methanol a specified by the International Methanol Producers & Consumers Association (IMPCA) [6315],
  • MMA has additional requirements for lubricity and particle count, and
  • MMC provides for wider tolerances on some of the characteristics compared to MMB.
