Cummins announces B7.2 diesel engine, B6.7 gasoline engine
6 March 2025
Cummins has announced two new medium-duty B Series engines: the B7.2 diesel engine and the B6.7 Octane gasoline engine. The engines were unveiled, together with the X10 diesel engine, at the NTEA Work Truck Week 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana. All three engines are part of the Cummins HELM™ (formerly ‘fuel-agnostic’) engine program.
The B7.2 engine is intended for a variety of medium-duty and vocational applications, including bus, pickup and delivery, utility trucks, refuse, and towing. The B7.2 will be rated at 240-340 hp and 650-1,000 lb-ft of torque.

The new engine will be capable of automatic engine shutdown and stop-start for improved fuel economy, will offer a compression release engine brake, and an extended oil drain interval pan option. It will also be equipped with a range of digital technologies, including predictive capabilities (prognostics) and advanced over-the-air features.
The B7.2 engine will be manufactured at Rocky Mount Engine Plant in North Carolina and will go into full production in North America starting in 2027.
The B6.7 Octane engine—Cummins’ first advancement into the gasoline market—offers up to 300 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque. The engine is 10% more efficient than other gasoline engines in its category, while offering an extended oil service interval of up to 15,000 miles, according to Cummins.

The new engine uses standard 87 octane gasoline and requires less maintenance with a simple, passive three-way catalyst (TWC) and no need for the complex, diesel-style DPF+SCR aftertreatment and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). The engine will be US EPA 2027 certified, while also meeting CARB low NOx emission standards.
The B6.7 Octane engine will be available for order later in 2025 across Kenworth’s line of Class 5-7 trucks, among other applications. Kenworth expects the engine to be a popular option in California and other states that have adopted CARB emission standards.
At the NTEA tradeshow, Cummins also showcased the 2025 6.7 L Turbo Diesel, unveiled in January this year, that powers all of Ram Truck’s Heavy-Duty diesel lineup. The 2025 version of the engine delivers 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft of torque for Pickups, and 360 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque for Chassis Cab.
