In 2025, total biofuels consumption accounted for about 6% of total US transportation sector energy consumption. Ethanol's share was about 6%, and the share of biodiesel, renewable diesel, and other biofuels combined was about 2%.

Federally, gasoline and diesel primary suppliers must reduce the carbon intensity (CI) of the gasoline and diesel they produce and import from 2016 CI levels by 3.5 gCO2e/MJ in 2023, to 14 gCO2e/MJ in 2030. Provincial requirements also exist. In 2024, the national average ethanol blend level was almost 10% and the combined level of biodiesel and renewable diesel in diesel fuel was nearly 7%.

Ethanol use in 2025 was minimal. Efforts to increase its use ongoing. NOM-016 limits ethanol to 5.6%. Ethanol blending not permitted in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. MTBE is the primary oxygenate in use. Increased ethanol blending is anticipated after legislative changes carried out in 2025.

A minimum of 29% renewable energy use or a reduction in greenhouse gas intensity of 14.5% by 2030. In 2022, FAME + HVO represented 7.2% by energy of diesel consumption with most countries offering B7 as standard diesel fuel. Bioethanol on average represented 4.7% by energy of gasoline consumption. Several countries offer E10 as gasoline fuel while others only offer E5. Almost 40% of biofuels consumed in the EU27 were produced from residues and waste. ETBE is also used to help meet renewable content is gasoline.

Electrification is the primary means to reduce consumption of liquid fuels. Ethanol blends rate of about 2.5% in 2025. Some provincial E10 mandates.
